American electric vehicle and clean energy giant Tesla Inc. is in talks with Samsung Electronics for the production of Tesla’s next-generation self-driving chips.
Headquartered in South Korea, Samsung Electronics is already making chips for Tesla’s Hardware 3 computers. Both companies are in talks with each other regarding the chip designs since the beginning of this year. In fact, Tesla and Samsung have even discussed various designs and exchanged a number of chip prototypes. These discussions were for the upcoming self-driving computer Hardware 4 by Tesla Inc.
Interestingly, Samsung is the world leader in chip-making while Tesla leads the world of electronic next-generation cars.
Samsung is in competition with its rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to bag the contract. We will have to wait and see who gets the final deal.
What will happen if Samsung cracks this deal? We will see the famous mobile making Korean company, manufacture Tesla’s hardware 4.0 chip or Self-driving computer 2, as Elon Musk referred to it. The company plans to give way to mass production in its Hwaseong plant based in the Gyeonggi Province of South Korea. The company will use 7-nanometer processing technology for the manufacturing process which is expected to begin anytime this year.
When asked to comment on this news, both the companies remained silent. Samsung declined to comment whereas Telsa had no prompt response.
If these discussions see any success then we will see this new chip launched in Telsa all-new Cybertruck in the year 2022.
