OnePlus Nord 2 is slated to hit the store shelves in Q2 2021 and will be the Chinese phone maker’s first handset without a Qualcomm chipset.
The OnePlus 9’s hotly-anticipated launch is just around the corner, with the series set to arrive sometime later this month. If previously surfaced reports prove to be true, the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro will boast better cameras than their precursors.
Aside from this numbered flagship series, OnePlus is gearing up to take the wraps off another lineup. Making its debut in 2020, the OnePlus Nord helped the phone maker pave the way into the mid-range segment.
The OnePlus Nord, which continues to be one of the best-selling phones in India and some other markets around the world, is set to receive its 2021 successor. Citing information received from insider sources, Android Central’s Asia Editor Harish Jonnalagadda has revealed that the upcoming Nord will carry the Nord 2 moniker, and pack MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 chipset, under the hood.
This is a notable change for OnePlus, which has a reputation for using Qualcomm chipsets in all its phones. The Nord was the first phone to pack a chipset outside of the Snapdragon 800 series, but for the last year, OnePlus took advantage of designs in Snapdragon 600 and 400 series for the Nord N10 5G and N100.
The Dimensity 1200 was announced earlier this year, and the platform is built on a 6nm node. Moreover, it has a prime Cortex A78 core that goes up to 3.0GHz, three additional A78 cores at up to 2.6GHz, as well as four Cortex A55 cores that can go up to 2.0GHz for energy-efficient tasks.
In addition to that, it has a Mali-G77 graphics processing unit with nine cores. The phone comes with a 5G dual SIM dual standby, a feature that Qualcomm has still not adopted this year.
This is a significant win for MediaTek, which has faced strong competition from OnePlus in the past, especially in the mid-range and high-end categories. The introduction of Dimensity series has changed that, with MediaTek securing design wins from LG, Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, and now OnePlus.
One of Nord’s key selling points was the affordable pricing, with the phone carrying a $340 price tag in India, and becoming one of the best cheap Android phones. The Dimensity 1200 is a significant hardware upgrade from the Snapdragon 765G, so it will be interesting to see where the company positions the Nord 2 concerning the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro phones.
More details about the hardware are expected to surface in the coming weeks. Watch this space for more on the OnePlus Nord 2.
